Course Content

  •

All of the theory unit standards that make up the National Certificate in Carpentry (level 4) are credited upon competency being achieved.  This is what apprentices would otherwise have to do at night classes or block courses.  We are offering the latest version of this qualification V10.

  •

On completion of this course, each learner would have had the opportunity to become fully competent in the knowledge and use of hand tools, power tools, and workshop machinery.  They will be able to read drawings, understand specifications and prepare appropriate carpentry calculations.

  •

Learners will have also gained a broad knowledge of the construction processes, and the many materials used and accepted in the building industry today.  Completion of this course will enable a learner to enter the industry as a confident, safe and productive employee!

FAQs about the G&H Certificate

Q:

How does "work experience" work?

  •

Learners who are assessed as "work ready" and who are up to date with their individual training plans will be supported and encouraged to do work experience where we can arrange suitable placements.  There they meet real employers and increase their chances of getting a job at the end of the course, and also learn what work on a real construction site is like.

Q:

Do I get paid for "work experience"?

  •

No.  One of the work experience rules is that learners are not paid for course time spent on the job.

Q:

Is there a lot of time on the course for making things in the workshop?

  •

There is some time each week in the workshop, but the course is mostly about providing you with knowledge for the industry so you can go out and develop your practical skills from there.

Q:

At school I wasn't much good at reading and maths.  Will I be able to do this course?

  •

Our tutors and mentors are able to spend some time helping with your reading and maths.  We find that all the pictures in e-learning also helps our learners to understand and learn about carpentry.

Q:

Are there any holiday breaks during the course?

  •

Because our learners can start at any time of the year, we have no term or semester breaks except Christmas and New Year.  Once you have been accepted onto your course you will receive an individual training plan and offer of acceptance which will have scheduled holiday breaks included.
