Background to e-Learning Development

G&H Training spent three years developing an innovative carpentry e-Learning programme.  The programme contains all the theory unit standards in the National Certificate in Carpentry (L4).  It was created with the aim of  providing an efficient, effective method to deliver this part of the National Certificate qualification, and making the learning experience interesting for learners.

Benefits of e-Learning

G&H believes that e-Learning will benefit industry in the following ways:

  • By providing a standardised system of delivery for the National Certificate in Carpentry qualification that is accessible around New Zealand, it would encourage consistency in the sector and allow for more coherent quality assurance;

  • By using computers we can bring more of the reality of a building site into learning, narrowing the gap between theory and practice;

  • E-learning will be a cost-effective and easier way for builders to become licensed, and will allow unqualified builders to begin studying towards their qualification prior to compulsory licensing;

  • The learning material can be updated and instantly made available to learners, to reflect changes in building regulations, standards and trends, which avoids extra costs.

In turn, learners will benefit from:

  • The variety of learning tools such as colour photographs, video clips, and interactive exercises that make learning more effective and more fun and give insight into modern industry materials, practices and methods;

  • Regularly testing their understanding of the material they have studied before moving on to the "summative assessment" (like a final exam);

  • Use of consistent assessment methods;

  • Being able to study how, when and where their career goals, lifestyle and commitments allow, provided they have access to a computer (e.g. at home, work or approved venue).
